La Badiola is located a short distance from Castiglione della Pescaia, in Maremma, near what was once Lake Prile, in the centre of the area reclaimed and transformed into an agricultural estate by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Leopold II. Today Terra Moretti continues to champion that illuminated project that dates back to the mid-1800s: 500 hectares expressing the biodiversity of the Maremma landscape, composed of vineyard-covered hills, olive groves, woods and Mediterranean scrub. This wonderland hosts the source of water called Acquagiusta, an underground spring that flows naturally from the rock. Since the time of Leopold II, this incredible spring has been the source of life and fertility for the estate’s land. It symbolizes the entire agricultural project of La Badiola and its wines, born from the know-how of the past to restore identity and relevance to a long-forgotten area. Tradition, nature, research and experimentation: the family philosophy at the service of an extraordinary area that begs to be discovered.

A MAGICAL STRIP OF TUSCANY

The eastern and western vineyards

Water, earth, sun and wind. These are some of the main elements that were examined to create the vineyard, choose the exposure of the vines and the most suitable grape varieties. There are now about 30 hectares planted with vines, concentrated in a single unit on two specific portions divided by an avenue of cypresses and maritime pines. The western vineyard was chosen for the production of white grapes, since the soil, once crossed by the Acquagiusta spring, appears particularly poor in major elements, while it is very rich in gravelly matter and mineral substances. Its character is easily discernible at first glance, due to its light-coloured soil that can moderate heat and regulate vegetative development. The eastern vineyard is home to the dark grape varieties and has remarkable nutritional elements and a dark-coloured soil, which is ideal for absorbing heat and enabling the grapes to achieve perfect ripeness.

Tradition, evolution and language

At La Badiola, the wines develop gently. Respect for the fruits of nature is essential, as well as the character imprinted by the terroir and the cultivated varieties. Interventions in the cellar are therefore limited to the essential so as to make authentic, pure wines. No shortcuts are allowed: the enhancement of the grapes is the main objective, so much so that ageing is carried out exclusively in steel tanks. The style constantly evolves, in a quest for the most intimate reflection of tradition and a current, original and direct language; immediately understandable as deep and determined to highlight the true nature of a magical strip of Tuscany.
