Sella & Mosca is a kaleidoscopic explosion of nature. It was founded in 1899 in Alghero, a marvellous part of Sardinia, by two enterprising adventurers from Piedmont: Sella, an engineer and Mosca, a lawyer. A feat that still sounds pioneering, unique and exemplary to this day, it involved a great deal of impressive work to transform vast and uncultivated swathes of land into an agricultural nursery in the first instance and later into a wine-growing business: thousands of boulders were removed and the wild scrub tamed to make room for the vineyards. Finally, a state-of-the-art winery was built. This huge undertaking is commemorated by several sandstone boulders that lend unique character to the landscape. Even today the innovative spirit and the quest to best express the characteristics of the Sardinian terroir typify this company, which consistently continues the work of its founders. Sella & Mosca is the highest possible expression of a sunny, robust land, capable of forging characterful wines that are contemporary yet respectful of their history.

A KALEIDOSCOPIC EXPLOSION OF NATURE. A STORY THAT TRANSLATES INTO WINE

Sardinia has always been dedicated to viticulture, starting with the sun-kissed, breezy area of Alghero. Sella & Mosca is a kaleidoscopic blend of scents, colours and flavours poised between past and future. On the island, Sella & Mosca has selected some of the most valuable land parcels, including I Piani, north of Alghero, which represents the largest area. Nestled in an incredible botanical park surrounded by over 520 hectares of vineyards, the estate extends for some 650 hectares. At the centre lies a sunny hamlet, caressed by the mistral winds, showcasing a history of people, industriousness, tradition and culture. A place unlike any other, it is dotted with oleanders, maritime pines, palms and eucalyptus. In addition to these lands, there are small plots in Gallura, in the north-eastern part of the island (15 hectares) and Giba, in Sulcis, on the south-western coast, between Capo Teulada and the Iglesiente mountains (6 hectares). Each site enjoys a different terroir and unique environmental elements: soils that are rich in minerals but poor in water reserves, where the air is clear and the climate is as hot as it is windy. Despite their geological cohesiveness, the estates boast a great variety of soils: clayey, sandy, calcareous and volcanic. In each micro-area, the various grape varieties yield different qualities, producing an exceptional range of characteristics. Sella & Mosca wines are Mediterranean in character, so it is easy to discover in them the natural features of their terroirs of origin: the sun, the wind and the sea, the generous and robust soils, the scrub and its myriad scents. Regardless of grape variety and terroir traits, their Mediterranean character emerges very clearly, alongside the ability to maintain the virtues of tradition via novel ideas. Vitality and elegance, strength and finesse, warmth and freshness: each wine seeks a skilful balance between the exuberance of nature’s fruits and the know-how of those who shape them. An inseparable union and unique means to forge a timeless wine and a sublime tasting experience.
