Teruzzi was founded in 1974 in a beautiful and incomparably precious location: San Gimignano, known as the Manhattan of the Middle Ages due to its incredible towers. The winery has always had a modern bent, pursuing the most innovative ways to produce the best possible wines. The challenge was launched by the founder, Teruzzi, who was an engineer by profession but also, by choice, a passionate winemaker. His legacy has now been taken up by the Moretti family, which continues to champion innovation, respect for the winegrowing area and the Tuscan wine tradition. These are the hallmarks of the winery and the thread that links the past, present and future. The bond with its native homeland is very strong but dynamic, as anchored to its history as it is forward-thinking in its aim of contemporary enhancement. This outlook strives to promote the noble heritage and character of San Gimignano and its most precious resource: Vernaccia.
THE OUTLOOK FOR VERNACCIA
Four variations and a common denominator: San Gimignano
The company’s estate covers an area of 180 hectares, including 94 of vineyards, of which 60 are planted with Vernaccia. Teruzzi is therefore a majority stakeholder in San Gimignano wine. The boundaries of the appellation are all within the municipality, a treasure chest that preserves a substantially homogeneous vineyard. Its soils are of Pliocene, marine origin and are composed of yellow sands and clays, yet the differences and variations within the conformation of the land present a complex picture. This kaleidoscopic array of areas and sub-areas, parcels and vineyards, is capable of conferring their mark, also because the Vernaccia grape ‘feels’ the differences in soils like few others. Another crucial aspect here is the climate, which is positively influenced by the proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea, just 60 kilometres away. The Teruzzi vineyards are located in 4 macro plots: Casetta, Racciano, Montegonfoli and Ponte Rondolino, ensuring variety in terms of soils, altitudes, slopes, microclimates, and many other factors that can be optioned to contribute to the best possible result.
Pioneering innovation and character in the glass
The mission of Teruzzi is to support and shape the character of the grapes, investigate diversity in terroir and seek, subsequently, to transfer the quintessential into the bottle. It underscores the company’s desire to confer an original style on its wines, wholly attributable to the terroir and the vintages but unique in its kind. Innovation has always accompanied the company’s decision-making processes, from its foundation to the present day. Its pioneering role, the pursuit of avant-garde methods, meticulousness and pristine style go hand in hand with the quest for approaches that forge personal, authentic wines that are rich in flavour and reflect the intrinsic characteristics of the area.
